Comic writer Mark Evanier on "Unfinanced Entrepreneurs", people who try to get artists to provide them with art without a contract or payment up front, for projects that are "surefire hits":
The columns are a bit old but haven't lost any of their validity. "Unfinanced Entrepreneurs" are still out there, still trying to scam free work out of creative people, and may of them don't (or won't) even realize that what they're doing is seriously unethical.
Being a professional, Mr. Evanier neglects to mention a subspecies of these hucksters that preys on amateur and aspiring artists and is particularly prevalent around DeviantArt: the You'll-Be-Payed-In-Recognition crooks. These are the folks who'll tell you that they can't afford to pay for your work, but it'll be worth it to you because you'll get "name recognition" and "a foot in the door". These people may be more successful at getting free work, since they target folks who are used to doing free requests and art trades with their online friends and aren't used to thinking of their time as having value, rather than pros who expect a paycheck for a job...but they're just as unsuccessful when it comes to their "guaranteed success" projects.
